OTL Invitational participants make selection for AZ Challenge and Perris
Powerplay
The third On The Line Invitational event took place at Skydive Arizona on 5th and 6th May 2007,
with slots again limited to 21. The event, which takes place roughly every other month, has stiff
competition for places, due to positive reports from previous participants. Jumpers enjoyed
complex and challenging large formation sequential skydives, making the planned 12 jumps in
two days despite less than perfect weather.
While several of the participants used the event to warm up for the Arizona Challenge later in the
month, others used it as an opportunity to hone and demonstrate their ability, still remaining
hopeful for an invitation. For the rest it was an opportunity to have fun while learning, and maybe
working up to next year’s list. Camera-flyer Gordon Lindsay provided jumpers with some great
shots of the difficult formations.
Organizer Gary Beyer said, “The event is really working out better than I’d hoped. Many of my
jumpers have been hand-picked by other organizers for their own events, having seen what these
guys can do. I’ve personally spoken to Dan BC and been able to recommend skydivers for the
Perris Powerplay in July, as well as Craig Girard who’s taken some new people on to this year’s
AZ Challenge. Without the OTL Invitational these jumpers wouldn’t have been able to show their
skills.”
Beyer added, “The event is not only a lot of fun to be part of, it’s also great to be able to see the
best coming out of so many newer jumpers who are keen to progress.”

Challenge but have not yet had the chance to demonstrate their abilities. I know there’s a lot of
new talent around that’s untapped. You can struggle to get your name ‘out there’ unless you’re
already a known skydiver on the scene for years. Organizing and overseeing really difficult 18-way
jumps like these means I can use it as a screening process.”
The group comprised skydivers from as far away as Colorado, California, Texas and Oregon, as
well as Arizona, all drawn by the fun as much as the challenge. “We really enjoyed the dives,” said
Deanna Frank, who came with her husband, Julias, from San Diego. “We are looking forward to
jumping [with this group] again in May”.
The event is also a way for existing Challenge jumpers to stay current and ready, and improve
their confidence in preparation for this year. Seven of the group had been on the Challenge in the
past.
“As an organizer on the Challenge, I know what’s needed in order to succeed. Scrutinizing
jumpers and debriefing them on specific Challenge skills was big part of it. We spent a lot of time
talking about approach speeds, being in the correct quadrant right out the door, and the level of
aggression needed to perform at your best. After the next OTL invitational in May I’ll pick a certain
amount of these jumpers and forward their names to Craig Girard, who runs the Challenge.”
Although the jumps are intended to push the limits of all involved, it’s a relatively low-pressure
environment which means people can learn and make mistakes without some of the worry
associated with really big, high-profile events.
Said Beyer, “I want people to learn the necessary skills that’ll let them excel when it counts. As we
get closer to May we’ll be moving towards fewer mistakes and more personal responsibility for
making it work.”
As in December, the jumps were carefully designed to train aspects of demanding, large
formation skydiving. Six jumps were made from the SkyVan, with a 6-way chunk launched, two
floaters and the rest diving. The remaining six jumps were 5-way chunks from the otter, with eight
people total outside and the remaining ten diving. The first point was slightly quicker from the
SkyVan and the group averaged three to four points per 18-way jump.
“It was a fun, ego-free group of skydivers who performed really well,” said Beyer. “We did some
really hard, outfacing dives, one of which had only two out of eighteen in-facing. We went from that
formation, via two spinning 6-ways and two 3-ways, to a 12-way in-out with bipoles on either end -
a real tester. On another the whole 18-way was held together by an inherently flimsy central bipole
with frisbees on the outside. We did some major big-piece flying, with 9-ways verticals with deep,
3-body crosses. It gave everyone plenty to test their limits.”
Many skydivers found something a little different in the way the dives were planned. “The jumps
were very creative,” said Molly Osborne from Tucson. “I had a grand time,” commented Harry
Waller.
So far this new event is turning out to be a real proving ground for the Arizona Challenge and is set
to continue indefinitely. The next On The Line Invitational is planned for May 4th and 5th and is
already fully-booked.

Team Aeon - the future of skydiving?
Following on from a very successful year coaching Kids' Tunnel League at SkyVenture Colorado,
On The Line Skydiving is teaming up with Women's World Champion Emma Beyer (Team Airkix),
Paul Gatling (AZ Razor), and 13-year old Ellie McCoy (Colorado Prodigy).
The line-up is:
Gary Beyer - Inside Center
Emma Beyer - Outside Center
Ellie McCoy - Point
Paul Gatling - Tail
Although Ellie is too young to actually make a skydive, she already has hours of flying in team
Colorado Prodigy's sponsor tunnel, SkyVenture Colorado. Coached by On The Line Skydiving
throughout last year, including 1-on-1 skills and 2-on-2 4-way with World Champions, Ellie is one
of the best 13-year old 'skydivers' in the world. The team plans to train hard in the tunnel
throughout 2007 with a view to putting up some serious scores at wind tunnel competitions in the
near future.
